Situation

Southern border with Guatemala — Mexico's primary migrant entry corridor and northbound cocaine landing zone. Tapachula hosts the INM Siglo XXI facility, the largest migrant detention center in Latin America (~3,500 capacity), and is the southern terminus of the La Bestia rail route plus the Suchiate River informal crossings (Ciudad Hidalgo / Tecún Umán). Active CJNG vs. Sinaloa border war since 2023 around Frontera Comalapa, La Concordia, Chicomuselo, and Motozintla; mass forced displacements (~10,000+ residents) and weekly narcobloqueos. "Cartel de Chiapas" emerged as a Sinaloa-aligned local proxy. MS-13 / Barrio 18 cells spill in from Guatemala and run extortion of Tapachula businesses. Pacific cocaine offload at Puerto Chiapas. Statewide homicide rate is deceptively low because violence is concentrated in border municipalities.
